Okay, I am getting tired of this and am not sure what to do about it. I am sure there has been a thread on this in the past but I am not prepared to go scaling through everything.

Lily has taken to eating Quin's poo and sometimes, but rarely, her own. She does not touch Jewel's who eats the same thing as Quin. (At least not that I have noticed). I have been really good about immediately cleaning up after them lately but I guess I missed one of Quin's and she sure enough found it and chowed down. Each of my dogs has their own area of the yard that they do their business in....well Quin really is the only one who needs his own spot.

Lily is fed Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Venison and Sweet Potato and Fish (Alternating flavours because she develops allergies to protein sources after prolonged exposure). She has been on this for I would guess about 6 months. I am not sure if she feels she is missing something from her diet or if it is a dominance thing. Quin is the head of the house (of the dogs that is). Lily has always been one to try to subtly "push" him to test her limits with him. Jewel is on the bottom of the hierarchy. Now Quin has recently been diagnosed with cancer (but you wouldn't know it because he is still energetic and full of life). He has a lump in his leg. I noticed the lump about 4 months ago. I do not know if Lily senses that Quin has cancer or if I am giving her too much credit. Do dogs sense these things and equate cancer with weakness? Anyway, her eating of his poo started about 3 or 4 months ago.

I do not know how to treat this. If it is dominance, then do i just let what will happen happen? (Quin is going for surgery next week) and he will be in no shape to try to maintain his status. And if it is something missing from her diet what do I do? I just started adding a prozyme powder to her food to see if that helps with the absorption of minerals from her food. I just find it odd that she eats his poo and not Jewel's.

Please HELP! It is really gross since Lily LOVES to lick everyone and everything.

I have heard that putting some pineapple juice in their food deters them from eating poo....good luck its so yucky. Casey was doing this until she puked it up in the living room... from then on she got holy sh'te everytime she went near anything that resembled poo and she doesn't eat it any more...now its just any piece of garbage we come along on our walks Rolling Eyes

The dog experts don't know what causes it. Most likely either a learned behaviour (dogs caged for long periods of time, left in yards in a lot of feces or as pups with unclean environments can start this behaviour of "cleaning up) or nutritional deficiency are some of the theories.

I highly doubt it is dominance. If she was peeing over top of his stool, that's often a sign of dominance. I would bank more of the fact she's feeling like she's missing out on something in her diet. Or she had a particularly tasty one and figured this might be a good idea to keep going with it....

This winter, when we had tons of snow, suddenly both my dogs were mowing down on poosicles! That has never happened in the 6 years I've had Cedric! Once the snow was gone, no poo eating?!?! Maybe they just get in the mood for something different Puking Shrug

Our Wynn has a thing for cat poo.. and with all the cats that wander through the back yard, she has her pick.

Its really disgusting, and Ive taken it out of her mouth more times then I would like to remember. She's been reprimanded, and chased away from the poops, but she still goes sniffing around for what she can find. In the winter we had the 'poocicles' thing happening too.

Ive spoken with the vet about this and she said that its a pretty normal, albeit icky, thing for dogs to do. Its important though to have fecal tests, and make sure they are wormed regularly if they are poo eating. We also keep her on good food, though she can be really picky, thankfully that doesnt seem to be from allergies, but more her being a spoiled girl. Razz

No dog poo thankfully, and I try to clean up the cat poops whenever I can find them.

I hope someday she will have had enough of them..
